Kolkata, Mar 2 (ANI): Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said she would not contest the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, but campaign for her party.
"It is not mandatory to contest the elections. I will campaign for my party," she said.
When questioned if the Trinamool Congress is elected to power and forms the next government in West Bengal, Banerjee told reporters at her Kalighat residence here that in that case she could get elected to the assembly within six months for which there is a constitutional provision.
"Now if I devote myself to campaigning, I can concentrate more on my work. I will continue as Railway Minister and fulfil my commitment," she said.
Welcoming the six-phase polling schedule for West Bengal as announced by the Election Commission of India, Mamata Banerjee had earlier on Tuesday said her list of candidates was ready, but she was waiting for Congress to draw up its own before negotiations for seat adjustment could begin.
The state will have elections in six phases. The first phase of voting will take place on April 18, second phase on April 23, third phase on April 27, fourth phase on May 3, fifth phase on May 7 and sixth phase on May 10. (ANI)
