Mokokchung (Nagaland), Feb 26(ANI): Writers, scholars and artists from Assam and Nagaland came together for a peace meet in an effort to mend the troubled relations between the two states on Saturday.

The peace meet, which was held at Mokokchung in Nagaland, was themed as 'Naga-Assam Peace and Confidence Building Meet'.

Most of the scholars emphasized that the people of both the states wish for peace to prevail and want all the animosities to be removed.

The writers talked at length about the historical cordial ties that had existed between the Assamese and the Nagas.

Girin Phukan, a noted writer and historian from Assam, said that there used to be harmony between the two groups because of inter-marriages between them.

"If you remember history, we should also remember historical facts. The historical facts also contribute towards building peace," Phukan said.

Phukan also said that the old Ahom kingdom of Assam had worked on some points that can be used in present times to augment better relations with the Nagas.

Dr. Lanusashi, a professor from the Nagaland University pointed out that Nagas and Assamese had shared very cordial relations historically.

"During this period there were no misunderstanding between the people of Assam and the Naga people. And if peace is disturbed in our generation, the coming generations will blame us," he said.

Assam and Nagaland share a long disputed border problem where Nagaland claims land on the side of Assam's border areas with it.

Last year, many conflicts had been witnessed between the people of the two states regarding issues of borders and territories. (ANI)
