Danny Boyle applauded for theatre comeback

London, Feb 25 (ANI): Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, who has returned to the theatre after more than 20 years with a stage version of Frankenstein, has been applauded by critics.

The 'Slumdog Millionaire' director's production has opened at London's National Theatre.

And Boyle has won praise for his latest project, which stars actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his monster.

"The Frankenstein story has become so familiar that it might seem an impossible task to make the old story seem fresh," the Daily Star quoted Charles Spencer of The Daily Telegraph as saying.

"Yet somehow Boyle does just that, constantly creating shocks, spectacular coups de theatre and scenes that tug at the heart," he said.

And Libby Purves of The Times added, "It is a hell of a production. This taut, thrilling play runs to its awful conclusion without an interval, indeed with hardly a moment for breath.

Boyle began his career directing plays before moving into film with the crime thriller 'Shallow Grave' in 1995. (ANI)
