Buddhadeb to meet Ratan Tata Oct 3

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

Kolkata, Sep 30 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee Tuesday said a meeting would be held with Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata Oct 3 to discuss the ongoing land row over the Nano small car project at Singur.

'The meeting between the Tata Motors' chairman Ratan Tata and the state government is scheduled to be held on October 3,' Bhattcharjee told reporters at the state secretariat here.

Declining to comment on the subject of the talks, he said the government would, however, try its best to resolve the imbroglio.

'I would not say anything about the meeting. You all would get to know about the outcome of the dialogue on that particular day,' the chief minister said, adding the state government had not violated the accord signed Sep 7 before Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi at Raj Bhavan.

'The government has offered the maximum land (70 acres) to Singur farmers from inside the Tata Motors Nano project site. Now, it's not possible for us to offer more land from the area,' he said.

Emphasising the importance of the integrated character of the auto cluster, he said: 'We never promised to give 300-400 acres of land from the Nano project site. Now if we try to give back land to more number of farmers from the project area, it'll affect the integrated character of the project.

'It's quite unfortunate but I can clearly see the reflection of Trinamool Congress' demand in (Pradesh Congress president) Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi's statement given in the all-party meeting today,' he said.

At an all-party meeting at the state secretariat Writers' Buildings Tuesday evening, the Congress demanded 'more land' for affected Singur farmers.

All political parties, except the state's principal opposition force Trinamool Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), participated in the dialogue to resolve the Singur imbroglio.
