India B claims inaugural day honour of the International Tent Pegging championship after clinching two gold medals that were on the cards.
India B team had an excellent start as they claimed two gold medals, on offer, on the opening day of the International Tent Pegging championship 2008 that commenced in the capital city of Manipur here on Thursday.
The tournament, which is organised under the aegis of Equestrian Federation of India, kicked-off at the Imphal Polo ground after Dr SS Sidhu Governor of Manipur, Dr S Budhichandra speaker Manipur Legislative Assembly and Phalguni Rajkumar secretary NEC formally inaugurated the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor of Manipur, Dr SS Sidhu gave heartiest welcome to all the participants and also wished them a pleasurable stay in Manipur.
The governor termed Manipur as the powerhouse of sports and also expressed the hope that such type of international championships must happen in the coming years to profit the blossoming tourism in the state as well sports of the state.
The governor also heaped praise on the achievement accomplished by the sportspersons for their state, and pressed hard to take special care of all these sportspersons who have made us all proud.
The opening ceremony witnessed a Pana Kanjei exhibition match and concluded with a cultural programme that included Pung Cholom and Maibi Dance. A total of three countries, India (team A and team B), Oman and Canada are taking part in the championship.
Jagdish Singh of India B culling 35.5 points clinched gold for the first podium finish in the tent pegging individual lance event followed by India A's Jaswinder Singh in second position on 33 points as Al Dep Ali of Oman won bronze medal with a tally of 22 points.
India B claimed the second gold of the day through Om Prakash, who tallied 29.5 points in the individual tent pegging rings & peg (2 run) competition pushing his team-mate Jagdish Singh (28) to second position. Oman’s Md Kamis (24 points) clinched bronze medal out-timing his compatriot, after completing his course/obstacle with a better timing, Syeed Mohammed as he had same number of points.
On Saturday, players will be seen in action competing for the individual tent pegging lance round (A) - 3 runs (6,6,4), the Individual tent pegging lance round (B)- 3 runs (6,4,4) and the Individual Rings and Pegs -2 runs.
