I will welcome responsibility of captaining Australia: Watson

Sydney , Sun, 30 Jan 2011 ANI

Sydney, Jan 30 (ANI): Shane Watson, who is being pushed forward as a candidate to succeed Ricky Ponting, would welcome the responsibility of captaining Australia.

Watson has been among Australia's best players in a disappointing Ashes summer, and the team's hierarchy has used his experience and leadership by having him front news conferences that are normally the domain of the skipper or his deputy.

Watson has been loath to discuss the issue but admitted it was a role he'd embrace, The Sydney Morning herald reports.

"Of course it appeals. It's the greatest honour in Australian cricket," he said of the captaincy.

However, he said Australia was blessed to have several leaders, including Ponting.

"Ricky Ponting has done a great job for the Australian team, as has Michael Clarke. Cameron White has been outstanding with the Twenty20 in the field, and his experience with Victoria makes him a great leader. He's a great prospect," he said.

Watson said the push for him to one day take over the helm might be a result of his being able to watch the likes of Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer and Glenn McGrath from close quarters.

"I've been lucky enough to be around some of the best cricketers to have ever played for Australia," he said. (ANI)
