Cabinet approves handsome hike for top government posts

New Delhi, Fri, 11 Jan 2008 NI Wire

The union cabinet on Thursday decided for a generous hike in salaries for the top seated government posts - the President, Vice-President, and Governors.

Now after the cabinet's approval President Pratibha Patil will get a cheque of Rs 1 lakh a month, double than that of her previous one, vice-president Hamid Ansari will now receive Rs 85000, an increase of Rs 45000 to his previous one and the Governor now will get Rs 70,000 once amendments to the law are cleared by Parliament in the next budget session.

Former Presidents emoluments have also been increased to Rs 50,000 per month, while the spouses of late presidents and vice-presidents have been sanctioned more facilities.

The hike was essential for them as despite holding high posts, they were paying much less than their subordinates.

“The hike was essential because the Vice President also the presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha was getting much less than an Member of Parliament, said Parliamentary Affairs and Information & Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi.

Vice-President was getting a consolidated salary of Rs 40,000 while an MP was receiving Rs 46,000 after their last hike in 2006.

President despite holding the highest post was receiving salary less than the ministers she appoints, senior bureaucrats appointed by those ministers and the generals of the armed forces, whose the President is commander.

Union ministers, comprising Prime Minister receive Rs 68,000, a Secretary in the Central Government get salary near about Rs 55,000 and the Cabinet Secretary and chiefs of defence services started taking more than Rs 50,000 two years ago.

President's monthly salary started with Rs 10,000 in 1951, which was 10 times higher than an MP's salary of Rs 1,030. But, in five decades MP's salary increased to 10 times in comparison to just 5 times hike in President's salary.

A handsome amount of salary is considered essential for professional politicians that hopefully would prohibit them from searching earnings by other illegal means. And so hike in salaries is considered essential for politicians to encourage them towards clean politics.

An average MP legally does not have other source of earnings, while he is under constant pressure to discharge public duties. Even in the case of MPs, better salaries and perks will help them do their job seriously and without delay as "unreal" pay-scales often see legislators attempting to steal the local area development funds.

Dasmunsi said the decision to increase salaries had been taken last year but since the then President and Vice-President were retiring, the move was deferred. The increase in emoluments will come into effect from January 1 last year, he added.
