British boxer Amir Khan to raise funds for Pakistan floods

Islamabad , Sun, 23 Jan 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Jan 23(ANI): World Boxing Association light-welterweight champion Amir Khan will host a charity dinner in his home town of Bolton on Sunday to raise money for rebuilding eight schools in Pakistan, which were destroyed by last year's unprecedented floods.

Amir, a British boxer of Pakistani parentage, travelled to Charsadda in September last year to see the devastation wrought by the natural disaster, and helped at a centre distributing aid.

"Pakistan is close to me because that is where my parents come from, but I haven't only done charity events for there, I did things after the 2004 tsunami and for Haiti last year," the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

Speaking about the visit to the flood affected areas, Amir told The Times: "There were still areas that were under water, so lots of people were just hanging around. They are all innocent victims of it and 15 to 20 millions were affected. These people have seen their whole life just ruined. It was so sad."

"There are still people who need aid. I think, I hope, I made a difference by going out there. It's not something I do for the publicity. I would do anything to help," he added. (ANI)
