Rich culture, immense art forms, foot tapping music and vibrant colours reflected the fascinating display of our exotic culture. Sumptuous cuisines, intricately designed handicrafts and a glitzy display of handlooms were enwrapped in the pastoral imagery of the Mela.

Pulsating Punjabi performance

Friday evening saw a pulsating evening performance by popular Punjabi singers Jassi Gill and Babbal Rai. The Chaupal was packed to full capacity with youngsters enjoying every song being belted out by the duo. They sang some of their hit high energy numbers like Bille bille aankh, Jaat de thekane baliye, Aat karte, Baapu zamindar, etc.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the reverberating performance of the Punjabi singers that lasted for over one and a half hour while the youngsters could not resist shaking a leg on their tunes. Jassi Gill not just entertained the youngsters but also gave them the message to always respect their parents.

Competitions at Chaupal

On 14th February, 'Best Dressed Couple' and 'Made for Each Other' competitions would be organised at the main Chaupal of Surajkund International Crafts Mela. The participants will be adjudged on basis of their age groups i.e. 18-25, 26-38, 39-50 & 51-65 years. First, second and third prizes will be given in each age group.

Best from waste

Another fascinating stall at the Mela is set up by Dharti Ma Trust, Faridabad at Stall no. 385, which is focusing on the theme of protecting and making environment clean. B.S. Bisht, who is the president of the trust, is managing the stall along with his wife, where they are selling items made from discarded and waste material.

"We have brought flower vases, wall hangings, baskets, trays, bird nests, slippers and coasters made up of waste materials, clothes and polythene bags. Our motto is to protect Mother Nature and keep surroundings clean. We collect waste material from houses and factories to make these items," said Bisht.

These items are made by physically-challenged artisans and women, mostly housewives. These have been made very creatively with minutest of details being highlighted very carefully.

Indeed a very thoughtful venture!

Unique glassware creations

Simply Glassic from Delhi has exhibited a vibrant range of artistic creations to accentuate your surroundings at Stall no. 775 at Surajkund International Crafts Mela. Artist Harjeet Kaur has designed the collection of designer vases, handpainted mirrors, hanging lights, floating candle holders, cutlery holders, serving trays and so on at the Mela. Tells Harjeet, Right from choosing the appropriate kind of glass to designing and painting the products and supplying them to retailers; all done single handedly.”

Glass painting essentially pertains to painting on glass that phenomenally transforms a plain piece of lifeless glass into a magnificent work of art. Choosing glass as a canvas is in itself a very daunting task. Adds Harjeet, “Glass being so fragile requires superb expertise to transform it from a lifeless piece to an enriched piece of art. The motifs, variegated in subject matter, all unique and individual in character are first outlined. They are then painted using special paints. These paintings enhance the look of showpieces, platters, wall hangings, etc.”

Every piece is handcrafted with exclusive designs and colors which is truly unique to that piece.
