IAEA asks Iran to inform about nuclear ship-building plans

Vienna, Dec 19 (IANS) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Monday said it had sought from Iran details of its plans to build nuclear-powered ships.

The agency reminded Iran that such a project must be in accordance with the landmark agreement reached in 2015 between Tehran and the P5+1 (United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, France and Germany), reports Efe.

"We have sought clarifications on the announced plans to develop nuclear propulsion for marine vessels," said IAEA General Director Yukiya Amano.

"I underlined the need to meet the relevant requirements of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol to it, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," Amano added.

The so-called JCPOA foresees substantial limits to the Iranian nuclear programme -- ensuring it lacks any military application -- in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran.

Amano spoke at his arrival to Vienna airport after his one-day visit to Iran, where he met Iran's President Rouhani, the Head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Akbar Salehi, and Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
