A low magnitude Earthquake struck Himachal Pradesh early Thursday. No losses of human life have been reported yet. The epicenter of the earthquake was Kullu. The tremors were also felt in nearby Mandi.
Himachal is an earthquake prone area as it lies mostly in Himalayas. There was a massive Earthquake in Kangra in 1905 that killed around 20000 people. That earthquake was of magnitude 7.8 on Richter scale. Due to it, most of the buildings in Kangra and Dharamsala were destroyed. The total cost of recovering from that earthquake was estimated at around 3 crores. Himachal Pradesh is in seismic zone 4 and 5. It is also in the most active Seismic Zones in the world. Severe tectonic movements have been noticed in past by the scientists.
Earthquake means shaking of Earth due to occurrence of seismic waves. It occurs due to movement of tectonic plates. The energy produced due to the movement of the tectonic plates cause the Earthquake.
There is Himachal Pradesh state disaster management authority located in Shimla that deals with such natural calamities. Government has made certain rules for the construction of buildings. Green Zones are developed around colonies. There is no way you can stop earthquake but you can always reduce the damage.
