Shweta takes lead in women's golf tourney

Lucknow, Nov 25 (IANS) Shweta Galande carded two over 72 to take the lead on the second day of the 16th leg of the Hero Women's Professional Golf Tour at The Palms Golf Club and Resort here on Friday.

Trailing her by a margin of one shot is Kolkata's Smriti Mehra with a total score of 142 after 36 holes. The Rs.6,00,000 ($ 8,760) event will culminate on Saturday.

Pune's Shweta Galande had a good start, carding a birdie on the very first hole. However, she could not sustain the momentum and carded four continuous bogeys on the sixth, seventh,eighth and ninth holes in her front nine.

She played a more controlled back nine, with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes and a bogey on the 11th. She ended the second round with a total score of 141.

Overnight leader Smriti Mehra carded five over 75 to take the second position after the second round. She would have hoped for a better day as her lone birdie of the round came on the ninth hole.

She made a string of bogeys on the fourth,

fifth,seventh,eighth, 13th and 14th holes.

Delhi's Vani Kapoor carded four over 74 to take the third place. She carded a birdie on the first hole, but thereafter struggled to stitch together a series of consistent shots, with bogeys on the 13th, 14th and 16th holes, and also a double bogey on the 10th.

Kapurthala's Gursimar Badwal finished her day in fourth position with a total score of 145. She carded two birdies on the 10th and 16th holes, while dropping shots on the fourth, ninth, 12th, 14th and 17th. She also carded a double bogey on the sixth hole.

Overseas player Kiran Matharu is placed fifth with a total of 146. She is followed by Panchkula's Amandeep Drall (147), and Delhi's Ankita Tiwana (148).
