Government approves new 62 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday accorded its approval for opening of one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) each in "62 uncovered districts".

The outlay for the programme is Rs 2,871 crore, an official statement said.

There will be total seven Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in Delhi -- one each in East, West, South, North, North East, South East Delhi and Shahdara, while Jammu and Kashmir will have five such schools -- one each in Srinagar, Bandipura, Ramban, Kishtwar and Phulwama.

These Navodaya Vidyalaya are aimed at providing quality education to the talented children mainly from the rural areas. The move is expected to benefit nearly 35,000 students.

The expenditure for this purpose during the 12th Five-Year Plan will be Rs 109 crore, with a spillover amount of Rs 2,761 crore from 2017-18 to 2024-25.

There will be one new Navodaya Vidyalaya each in Andaman & Nicobar, Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra; two each in Punjab, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh; three each in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka; four each in Meghalaya and Tripura; five in Uttar Pradesh; eight Gujarat; and 11 in Chattisgarh.

A full-fledged Navodaya Vidyalaya will provide employment to 47 persons. So, these new 62 schools will provide direct permanent employment to 2,914 individuals.

These Navodaya Vidyalaya are expected to generate unemployment opportunities for local vendors.

At present, there are 598 such sanctioned schools in 576 districts spread across 35 States/Union Territories. Out of these, 591 are functional.
