Cricket Australia fines BBL franchise Perth Scorchers

United Kingdom,Sports,Cricket, Mon, 14 Nov 2016 IANS

Melbourne, Nov 14 (IANS) Cricket Australia (CA) on Monday announced that Perth Scorchers have been fined following a breach of the salary cap rules applicable to the fifth edition of the KFC Big Bash League (BBL).

"Scorchers breached the allowable team retainer pool of $1.3m by $5,000. CA Code of Conduct Senior Commissioner Gordon Lewis AM determined Scorchers be fined the minimum penalty of $150,000, with $145,000 suspended pending no further breach of the team retainer pool rules for five years," CA said in a statement.

In reaching this decision, it was taken into account that Scorchers self-reported the salary cap breach to CA.

Cricket Australia's Head of Integrity, Iain Roy said: "Following a thorough investigation, we understand that this was not a purposeful breaching of the rules by the Perth Scorchers, and this has been taken into account for the purpose of fixing an appropriate penalty.

"We do however take a proactive, zero-tolerance approach to maintaining the integrity of our sport and this includes any breaches of salary caps in the BBL."
