Bengaluru, Nov 4 (IANS) The Karnataka government will promote use of LEDs in urban and rural areas across the state to minimise energy consumption and reduce global warming, said a top official on Friday.

"The state government will do its best to promote LED lighting in both urban and rural areas for saving energy and help to check global warming," said State Chief Secretary S.C. Khuntia at a trade event here.

As a semi-conductor device, LED (Light Emitting Diode) converts electricity into light and provides energy efficient lighting.

"We need to reduce electricity consumption by switching to LED from conventional bulbs and tube lights and promote modern lighting and switching system, which is environment-friendly," said Khuntia at an international conference on smart lighting and its future.

Organised by the Karnataka centre of the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE), the three-day expo on 'Vision 2020' for the lighting industry is showcasing technologies and products for smart lighting by using LED extensively.

"Speakers at the conference are deliberating on developments in the industry, use of renewable energy for lighting, effect of LED on health and well-being, policies, compliance and standards," said ISLE President Dilip Kumbhat on the occasion.

The state-run Electronics Sector Skills Council of India will conduct a day-long workshop on Sunday to impart skills to technicians in installing and servicing lighting products.

"Our focus is on lighting as an application and its effect on the well-being of all. A road map will be drawn for the maximum use of LED over the next four years across the country for domestic, commercial and industrial use," said ISLE Chairman S.N. Swamy.
