Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent protests

Jammu And Kashmir,National,Immigration/Law/Rights, Fri, 21 Oct 2016 IANS

Srinagar, Oct 21 (IANS) The authorities on Friday imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar and other places in the Kashmir Valley to prevent post-Friday prayer protests, a senior police officer said.

"Restrictions were imposed in the old city areas of Srinagar and Pampore town today (Friday) to maintain law and order," the officer said.

Life remained adversely affected for the 105th consecutive day in the Valley due to separatist called protest shutdown.

The intensity of both protests and shutdowns have, however, decreased recently.

Many private vehicles moved on roads and shops in interior markets functioned almost as usual in many parts of Srinagar and other places.

Educational institutions including schools, colleges and universities, however, continue to remain shut across the valley.

Despite authorities announcing that exams for 8th, 10th and 12th classes would be held in November, indications suggest that students are reluctant to sit in these exams as their studies had suffered during the ongoing unrest.

In the unrest that started here on July 9, around 91 persons have been killed and over 12,000 injured -- of whom about a 100 face the prospect of permanent blindness.
