New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India was committed to the development of Myanmar as the two countries signed new agreements to enhance bilateral ties during State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyis New Delhi visit.

"We have agreed to enhance our engagement in several areas" including in agriculture, renewable energy, and power sector, Modi said in a joint address to the media with Suu Kyi.

Underlining that New Delhi had a robust development cooperation programme with Myanmar, Modi told the leader of the National League for Democracy that "India stands shoulder to shoulder with you".

"As you lead Myanmar to become a modern and prosperous nation, India and its friendship will stand with you in full support and solidarity."

Modi also highlighted India's security cooperation with the neighbour that has just emerged from years of a military dictatorship with democracy still in its nascent stage. Suu Kyi, a worldwide democracy icon, led the nation's struggle against the military junta.
