Rome, Oct 19 (IANS) Asserting that he doesn't owe anyone anything, Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has reiterated his refusal to pay tax debts to Italy reportedly amounting to more than 40 million euros ($43.9 million).

In an interview published on Wednesday by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the Argentine legend said the Italian authorities have been unjustly claiming more than $43.9 million for the last 25 years, including 35 million euros ($38.4 million) as penalties for alleged tax violation that has been considered non-existent by all judges, reports Efe.

He pointed out that even if there was a debt, it had been already paid by Italian club Napoli under a decision of debt relief in 2003, as manifested by his lawyer Angelo Pisani.

Maradona lamented that the Italian authorities are dealing with him like a criminal, recalling that he was the only one who had his earrings and watches confiscated.
