Kejriwal wants to delay by-elections in Delhi: Congress

Delhi,National,Politics, Tue, 18 Oct 2016 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) The Congress on Tuesday accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of delaying by-elections here after the 21 Aam Aadmi Party legislators sought more time from the Election Commission of India to file their reply in the office-of-profit case.

"The AAP fears by-elections on the 21 seats of Delhi, and Kejriwal doesn't want the by-elections to take place before the Punjab and Goa polls as it won't allow them to make false claims in those states," Delhi unit Congress chief Ajay Maken told the media here.

"He is delaying the elections here," Maken said.

Maken also said if elections are "held today in Delhi then Kejriwal's AAP would come in third place".

The Congress leader's remarks come a day after the 21 AAP legislators, who were appointed Parliamentary Secretaries, sought four more weeks' time to file their reply before the ECI.

"They are giving a lame excuse that their pen drive was not working," Maken said.

"And even if the pen drive was not working then for that reason the elections should be delayed." Maken asked.

Attacking the Delhi government for its demand to axe the Shunglu Panel set up to probe some of the AAP government's decisions, Maken said: "The main problem with Kejriwal's party is that when they are in opposition they have some other rules and when they acquire power they say rules are different."

He also said that earlier when the AAP was in opposition it claimed the party was the champion of the RTI (Right to Information) Act and it wanted transparency.

"Now if someone wants transparency into the records, what is the problem with them?" he asked.

"When they were in opposition they used the same Shunglu Committee report to target Sheila Dikshit," Maken said.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday reiterated his demand that Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung should axe the Shunglu panel he set up to probe some of the AAP government's decisions.
