HC seeks Delhi government response on teachers' vacancies

Delhi,National,Immigration/Law/Rights,Education, Mon, 17 Oct 2016 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice to the city government and three city municipal corporations asking them why action should nto be taken against them for not complying with the court's earlier order on filling teachers' vacancies.

Justice Manmohan sought response from the government and civic bodies while hearing non-governmental organisation Social Jurist's plea that a high court division bench's 2001 order has not been complied with. Under the order, authorities were required to ensure there was zero vacancy of teachers at the commencement of each academic year.

The contempt petition filed through advocate Ashok Agarwal sought action against officials concerned for such "deliberate and intentional disobedience" of the court's order since 26,031 vacant posts of teachers existed at present.

"Due to deliberate omission on part of the contemnors, as many as 26,031 (this does not include 9,000 new posts created by the Delhi government) posts of teachers are still lying vacant in the Delhi government and schools run by three MCDs, depriving the students of their fundamental right to quality education," the plea has said.

It said the studies of more than 21 lakh students of these government and MCD schools have been affected as a result and that their fundamental right to education is being violated.
