Union Home Minister reviews Preparation for National Workshop on SMART Policing

The Union Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh reviewed the preparation for the National Workshop on SMART Policing, here today. The concept of SMART policing was introduced by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi at the 49th Conference of Directors General / Inspectors General (DGs/IGs) of Police at Guwahati on Nov. 30,2014 (SMART: S - Strict and Sensitive, M-Modern and Mobile, A-Alert and Accountable, R-Reliable and Responsive and T-Tech savvy and Trained).

The Ministry of Home Affairs is committed to streamlining and further improving the working and image of police in the country. The Ministry organised four Regional Workshops at Bangalore, Guwahati, Bhopal and Chandigarh early this year and is now planning to organise the National Workshop on SMART policing shortly.

The MHA is examining the best Police practices prevailing in different States for inclusion in the National Policing Programme to make it people friendly. The Union Home Minister directed the participants to examine the best police practices prevailing in other countries also and customise the same for the Indian Police. Shri Rajnath Singh also directed the Bureau of Police Research and Development (PR&D) to start a police journal by updating the best police practices. He further said that in addition to rewarding the police personnel for good work done on Smart plicies, the Ministry should examine the possibility of rewarding best police stations in the country. He mentioned that in order to incentivize SMART police initiatives, suitable criteria should be incorporated in the existing Police Medal Scheme.

The Delhi Police Commissioner, Shri B.S. Bassi gave a detailed presentation on Delhi Police initiatives on adopting the concept of SMART policing. He explained about the modernisation of police stations to make the police people’s friendly. Taking SMART policing initiatives to a widespread level involving the whole of Delhi Police, various Apps have been launched by the Delhi Police in order to simplify the processes and procedures for the convenience of the common people. The Delhi Police is also improving the public service delivery system and some of the Apps launched are Lost Report App, Himmat App and Motor Vehicle Theft – Mobile & Web App.

During the meeting, concept paper on SMART policing and compilation of best practices, new website on SMART policing by BPR&D, a website for record of martyrs by Intelligence Bureau and linking of websites of States Police and District Police to show case good work done by police were also discussed. The Union Home Secretary, Shri L.C. Goyal, Director Intelligence Bureau, Shri Dineshwar Sharma, Commissioner of Delhi Police Shri B.S. Bassi, Director General, BPR&D Shri N.R. Wasan and senior officials of MHA attended the meeting.
