In this post we have discussed about top 10 Hollywood horror movies of all time.

The term Horror movie refers to a film genre that often deals with evil forces or supernatural origins within the regular life and intends to rule over the viewer's instinctive fears. Those movies originated with the inspiration from literatures of Edger Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley etc and being featured more than a century. The viewers of horror films are generally used to face nightmares and aware of hidden fears and unknown terrors. As the horrific elements there may be ghosts, aliens, demons, vampires, monsters, evil witches, cannibals, serial killers and anything more unnatural. Hollywood is dealing with horror since 1920s with the appearance of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and The Monster (1925) etc. Followed by a series of Dracula and Frankenstein, now we came to the age of The Conjuring (2013) and the horror films are getting more matured and much horrifying. 1. The Exorcist / 1973

The Exorcist is adapted from a terrifying novel of William Peter Blatty which is a source of five movies till date, but this one can't be compared with any others. Since the release in 1973 The Exorcist kept the audiences creeping more than forty years. Can you imagine an innocent little face of a girl being possessed by an evil demon? If you try the film it will be impossible for you to forget the face. The possession makes her body positions unnatural and results to a height of the famous revolving head scene. Without any help of special effects the film created some truly terrifying situations and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

 

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street / 1984

In a Midwestern town of springwood, Ohio, a serial killer Freddy Krueger appears in the dreams of local teenagers and kills them both in the dream and reality. The teenagers were all in the darkness to understand the motive of the killer, but their parents understood that a dreadful secret of their past life is reviving again and haunting them through their children. Written and directed by Wes Craven, the film provides the debut of Johnny Depp and Freddy became an icon of terror from that time.

 

3. The Shining / 1980

The Shining is just like that where John Nicholson's character turns into a horrifying madness and chasing his family through a haunted hotel. The creepy film is based on a novel of Stephen King and Jack Nicholson provides an excellent performance to accelerate the movies success.

 

4. It / 1990

It is also based on a Stephen King novel of the same name. Where a clown called Pennywise preys on the local children and attracts them away from safety and not only kills them but takes the form of the victim's phobia to provoke an extreme terror. The protagonists known as 'The Losers Club' make a pact to destroy Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The film was aired first as a horror miniseries for its long duration but finally took shape of a film on 1990.

 

5. The Evil Dead / 1981

The Evil Dead is an American Horror movie written and directed by Sam Raimi focuses on five young college students hiked into a remote cabin within a wooded area while vacationing and faced a flood of evil forces and their demonic possession after revealing a text from a Book of the Dead. The hero of the film Ash has to kill his friends who are already possessed and transformed into 'evil dead'.

 

6. The Conjuring / 2013

The film is based on a farmhouse of Rhode Island where a family is experiencing some unnatural disturbing events and seeking help of two personal investigator and the warrens come to the assistance of the family. The film released on 2013 and entered among the highest grossing horror movies of all time and results a sequel called The Conjuring : The Enfield Poltergeist are going to release on June 10, 2016.

 

7. Poltergeist / 1982

It is a classic horror movie released in 1982 and very strangely the franchise has been crushed in real life due to some practical deaths occurred during the film-making. An actress was murdered at the age of twenty two, and the second one Carol Anne, who played the main role in Poltergeist, died at the age of twelve. The film portrays a Freeling family of California with their peaceful life that turns to a horrible disturbance due to some strange occurrence. The film grossed a huge amount business and recognized as among the classic horrors of all time.

 

8. The Blair Witch Project / 1999

The Blair Witch Project is a hype-surrounded movie of 1999 and said to be a found footage horror film. Three student filmmakers went to shoot a documentary film on a local legend called Blair Witch in the Black Hills and disappeared with their shooting equipments. A year later cameras and sound recorders were discovered. Those recovered footage was used to make the film where the characters are terrified by a sinister presence hiding among the woods. But the footage recovery hype may be a marketing strategy of the film.

 

9. Psycho / 1960

The film Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock is considered as the mother of all horror films awarded Academy for Best Supporting Actress and Best Director. A Phoenix secretary, who steals a bulk amount of money, goes on the run, checks in a secluded hotel and ends up there after a horrible encounter. Though the film received mixed reviews but summed great in the Box Office.

 

10. Alien /1979

The name refers to a strange creature of the outer world that stalks and kills the crew of a spaceship Nostromo that received a distress call from an unexplored planet and went there for investigation. The film received an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and considered among the best horror movies of all time.

So we can conclude that horror movies in Hollywood are taking place since the very early days of the industry. Though they are getting more and more technically equipped but simultaneously the simple old ones have still enjoys their significance among movie lovers thanks to their extraordinary way of invoking horror.
