Mardaani review: Rani Mukerji's taking matters into her own hands

New Delhi, Sun, 24 Aug 2014 NI Wire

After a long gap, Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee returned to hit the silver screen with her Mardaani look and of course she became successful in doing so. She has knocked the screen and her latest movie Mardaani has got appreciated a lot with the viewers. In spite of the fact the story and making has nothing new in its manifold, it is Rani Mukherjee who has proved the fact that she has ability to pull the movie with her alone.

One can compare the movie with the Singham starring Ajay Devgan but only in terms of script. Shivani, as the name of character of Rani Mukherjee in Mardaani is like the ladies edition of the the male cop of Singham Returns.

In fact Mardaani is all about a child-trafficking ring in which Pyaari, an orphan that Shivani is close to Shivani disappears one day. In her effort to find the reality about her, she cracked down many mysteries and thus she finally succeeded in her mission.

Despite the fact that Rani Mukherjee is a police cop, she behaves like a young police cop with her passion in finding the culprits as her own and against the will of society. Shivani is the investigating officer and the film is focussed on the cat-and-mouse game being played with her and her enemies.

Unfortunately, Mardaani well-executed first half is actually a setup for the great reveal, which isn’t the identity of the villain but Shivani’s Miss Macho avatar. That’s the one that gets the background score of Devi stotra, in case you missed the fact that Shivani breaking arms like they’re Kit-Kats and generally beating the bejesus out of men is the cop in her shakti roop.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a women going physically ballistic and in fact, Mukerji is one of the few Bollywood actresses who does a decent job of her fight sequences. However, Mardaani unequivocally advocates violence and that of the mindless variety. At one critical point, a bad guy tells Shivani all she can do is arrest him and he’ll work the system to get out scot-free. She responds with a death threat and adds that “encounter nahin, public outrage kehte hain.”

The message that Mardaani is setting out is clear: take the law into your own hands and lynch, bobbitise, murder; do what you will to the man you think is guilty and to hell with minor details like the law.

Mardaani clearly reflects the mirror and message to the culprits of society and it also show a message to society that there is nothing impossible about the war against the anti social elements if one has the potency and passion for the same.
