The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) questions the ill-timed and hasty decision of the central government to hike the import duty on sugar, which will lead to an immediate rise in the sugar prices.
It is beyond any reasonable understanding as to why the BJP-led NDA government took this decision in a tearing hurry when the general budget is scheduled to be presented in less than three weeks time.
The Narendra Modi government is taking anti-people decisions at a breath taking speed and barely three days after the completely unjustified and shocking railway passenger fare hike, it has delivered another blow now by its shocking decision on sugar, which will further burden the people with another price rise.
At a time when it is officially estimated that the country is likely to witness a deficient Monsoon, the central government’s decision on sugar imports will only add to the miseries of the aam aadmi.
The government’s decision would have been understandable had it been taken around the sugarcane crushing season in the country, but this hasty government move could also promote hoarding apart from hike in the prices of sugar.
It appears the Modi government is desperate to sugarcoat its rail and general budget and that is why it has shocked the people with harsh measures such as the huge hike in railway passenger and freight fares and followed it up quickly with a questionable decision which will result in a hike in the prices of sugar.
Within less than a month of coming to power, the Modi government appears to have hinted to the people of the country that the wait forache din, promised by them during the elections, could well turn out to be endless and the policies pursued by the UPA government will continue under the new regime.
