New Delhi, Wed, 18 Jun 2014 NI Wire

A high-level delegation of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, nder the leadership of its president Arvinder Singh, MLA, met the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board in a pre-arranged meeting, demanding that water emergency be declared in Delhi, and 500 more tankers should be deployed to tackle the water crisis.

As the meeting with the DJB officials started at the conference room, Shri Jagdish Tytler, Shri Mukesh Sharma, Congress MLAs Mateen Ahmed, Hassan Ahmed, Asif Mohammed Khan and Prahlad Singh Sahni said in one voice that at the behest of the BJP, the DJB was misbehaving with the Congress leaders. They demanded the DJB and the police officials to apologise for their misbehaviour. When tempers ran high, the DJB CEO and members of the Board expressed their apology for the incident. The delegation consisted of ex-MP Mahabal Mishra, former Delhi Ministers Rajkumar Chouhan, Kiran Walia, ex-MLA Sumesh Shokeen, Amrish Gautam, Nand Kishore, DPYC president Amit Malik, Vijay Lochav and Mehdi Majid.

The Congress leaders, in a memorandum submitted to the DJB, demaded that an additional 500 tankers should be deployed immediately to tackle the water shortage in Delhi, and also said that there was a drought-like situation as far as water supply was concerned in Delhi. The memorandum said the DJB should also put the Delhi Fire Services for the distribution of drinking water. The memorandum also brought to the notice of the DJB about the severe water shortage in some areas in West, South and North Delhi, like Bindapur, Mohan Garden, Budella Village in Vikaspuri, Devli, Chattarpur, Sangam Vihar, Palam, Brijwasan, Jaffrabad, Kakrola, Dwarka, Ambedkar Nagar etc. The memorandum also warned the DJP for supplying dirty water in Delhi.

Arvinder Singh and Shri Mukesh Sharma, terming the action of Delhi Police and the DJB as “undemocratic”, said what could the people of Delhi expect from the DJB when the elected representatives of Delhi were treated as criminals at the direction of the Union Home Minister when they went take up the water shortage issue with the DJB. They said Gujarat model-like repression was being unleashed in Delhi as the water situation had become so worse in Delhi that people have been forced to buy water from the market. They accused the DJB of playing into the hands of the water mafia, and said the DJB had deviated from its core purpose. Shri Mukesh Sharma said there was a lot of corruption in the deployment of DJB tankers, as they were being sold to the contractors, when the common people were thirsting for drinking water.
