The Delhi BJP President, BJP'‘s candidate from Chandani Chowk Lok Sabha seat and former Delhi Health minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, who played a pioneering role in making India Polio free today congratulated the country for being certified as 'Polio Free' by World Health Organisation.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, “I am very happy and contented that my dream of a polio-free India has become reality. Though several experts had discounted the possibility of achieving this when I had first started an effort to run the ‘Pulse Polio” campaign in Delhi and then convinced health ministers of other states to scale it up to the national level, yet the dedication and commitment of thousands of professional and volunteers have made it a reality.”

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, "At first, experts, both Indian and foreign, discounted the possibility of holding it because of the overwhelming number of doctors, paramedics, volunteers and administrators that would have to be assembled on a single day throughout the country. Remember, it was the age before Internet, mobile phones and widespread telecommunications and power. Yet, undaunted by these challenges, I went around the country persuading the health ministers of all the states to cooperate in making Pulse Polio a success," he added. In the past, no state-level health minister had ever succeeded in recruiting such widespread, bipartisan support for any campaign; leave alone a polio eradication programme.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, who has led this campaign of Pulse Polio and played the pioneering role in it will also be delivering a special lecture on India being pulse polio free at the "Polio Free Conclave" on March 29 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
