England held by Honduras in goalless draw

United States,Sports, Sun, 08 Jun 2014 IANS

Miami, June 8 (IANS/EFE) The English national football team's last FIFA World Cup warm-up match ended in a goalless draw against Honduras here Sunday at the Sun Life Stadium.

England created plenty of chances but the players could not score any goals, reports EFE.

Honduras lies in Group F along with France, Ecuador and Switzerland while England is in Group D with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in the World Cup.

The storm might have cleared but the way forward remains unclear for England manager Roy Hodgson after his side failed to score against a 10-man Honduras.

The game was suspended in the first half for 45 minutes because of a thunderstorm that threatened lightning.

"Honduras were quite physical and it was one of the most frustrating games I have been involved with for a long time and one that I will very, very soon forget. The tempo of our play and effort to score in the second half was commendable. I will take the draw and take the fact that we got out without any injuries," Hodgson said.

"We never ever discuss playing for a draw. Steven Gerrard has never heard me once before a game say, 'Listen lads, a 0-0 might suit us today'. We just concentrate 100 percent totally on how are we going to attack and how are we going to defend. I'd like to win it," the England coach said.

"A win is better. You are never going to go into the game trying to get a draw. You always reach for the stars. We go in there trying to get the three points. We have our game plan and if we perform to the best of our ability, we can beat this team, although we certainly won't underestimate them."
