Shimla, May 27 (IANS) Moved by the plight of an elderly woman who has been confined to a cowshed for over two months, the Himachal Pradesh High Court has taken cognizance of officials' indifference.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan Monday directed the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police of Kangra district to be present in the court June 2 for social insensitivity towards the woman's deplorable condition.

The court took suo moto cognizance of a letter written by NGO Sarvjan Hit Manch of Jaisinghpur in Kangra district to the acting chief justice quoting a media report.

The report said Chanchala Devi (65) has been confined to a cowshed for the past two months. The woman has lost one arm in a fire accident.

She has three daughters and a son. Her daughter-in-law committed suicide and her son is in jail.

As there is no one to look after her, she has been confined to the cowshed.

Her relative Raghunath, who is providing her food, is now showing inability to do so due to his old age.
