Funding needed to help CAR refugees: UNHCR

United Arab Emirates,Immigration/Law/Rights, Sat, 24 May 2014 IANS

Geneva, May 24 (IANS) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Friday said the agency and its partners needed more funds to help growing number of refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR).

"At present, there are 85,000 refugees in some 300 villages, making it extremely challenging for humanitarian agencies to meet their needs," Xinhua quoted UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards as saying at a press conference.

At present, more than 2,000 refugees are crossing border into Cameroon weekly, down from the recent peak of more than 10,000 in the last week of March.

Edwards noted that further funding was needed to expand services and better address the situation.

UNHCR sought $22.6 million, yet only $4.2 million have been received so far.

UNHCR renewed its call for donors to urgently step up funding to humanitarian operations in Cameroon.
