Bayern Munich beat Dortmund 2-0 to lift German Cup

Berlin, May 18 (IANS) Bayern Munich overpowered Dortmund 2-0 in a dramatic extra time to seal the domestic double at the German Cup final here Saturday.

Bayern Munich wrapped up their 17th German Cup title and their 10th domestic double following the victory over Dortmund at outsold Berlin Olympia stadium. It is the second time that Bayern defend their domestic double, according to Xinhua.

The Bavarians controlled the proceedings on the pitch for most of the time nonetheless Dortmund piled up at the second half. However, Bayern's Arjen Robben shocked Dortmund with the opener at the 107th minute before Thomas Mueller killed the game minutes later.

Dortmund started highly motivated into the encounter by pressing the German giants into the defence. Bayern were able to escape the pressure and to create the first chances of the match when Mueller and Robben tested Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller from close range in the opening period.

The two Bayern chances were a wakening call for Juergen Klopp's men that failed to implement their fast break strategy. Thus Bayern continued to produce opportunities, as youngster Pierre Emile Hoejbjerg pulled just wide of the fast post at the 43rd minute.

Dortmund nearly flabbergasted the German champions but Robert Lewandowski squandered the best chance for the "BVB" from very close range before the break.

After the restart both sides started carefully into the clash but it were again the "Bavarians" that worked out their first chance of the second half when Mueller forced Weidenfeller to a save from close distance at the 56th minute.

However, Dortmund responded through Mats Hummels whose header found the open goal but was cleared off the line by Dante at the 65th minute. Both sides tried to clinch the victory in regular time using the last of their strength but yet the extra time had to bring the decision after 90 goalless minutes.

The extra time started with a golden goal scoring opportunity for Dortmund as Pierre Emerick Aubameyang missed the target from 15 metres. Bayern seemed unimpressed as they gained the upper hand again before Robben utilised a cross to the far post by Jerome Boateng to slot home the opener at the 107th minute.

Dortmund threw everything forward before Mueller made the game safe by rounding Weidenfeller to poke home into the open goal at the 123rd minute, sealing Bayern Munich's domestic double of the season 2013/2014.

"At the first half I have not seen what I wanted to see. The second half was better but we have to benefit from our chances," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.

"We are very happy that we won the second title of the season. I have to congratulate my players," Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said.

It is the second title for Pep Guardiola in his first year at Bayern Munich.
