Ousted Thai PM to face impeachment over rice-pledging

Thailand,Immigration/Law/Rights,Politics, Thu, 08 May 2014 IANS

Bangkok, May 8 (IANS) Thailand's anti-corruption watchdog Thursday opted unanimously to suggest the impeachment of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra over her decision-making in a costly rice-pledging scheme.

The 7-0 verdict means she faces a vote by the Senate that could lead to impeachment and end her political career for five years.

"The commission considers there was enough evidence to indict (Yingluck) and refers the case to the Senate," Panthep Klanarongran, chief of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), said at a press conference.

NACC has unanimously agreed to indict Yingluck for allegedly having intent to exercise power of the Constitution concerning the rice-pledging scheme, The Nation reported.

The anti-graft agency will forward the case to the Senate to seek her impeachment.

If found guilty, Yingluck will be banned from politics for five years.

She was removed from the premiership Wednesday for abuse of power for unlawful transfer of a senior security official.
