Two Indians to be charged with rioting in Singapore

Singapore, May 4 (IANS) Two Indians will be charged in a Singapore court Monday with rioting, after an alleged attack on three compatriot housemates in a dispute over their utilities bill, a media reported said Sunday.

The Indian nationals, aged 29 and 36, who are unnamed in the report, were arrested for being part of a group of assailants who assaulted three other Indian men at a housing estate in Singapore's Jurong West area Thursday, Channel NewsAsia reported Sunday.

Police said that the victim had a dispute with the 29-year-old accused over the cost of their utilities bill.

Police had received a complaint from one of the victims, who was assaulted by the accused and eight other people.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to apprehend the others involved, police said.

The men convicted of rioting under Section 147 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, face a jail term not exceeding seven years and shall also be liable for caning.

The two accused face repatriation upon serving their sentences as per the country's law.

Singapore is one of the ethnically most diverse nations, consisting mainly of Chinese-origin people along with Malay, Indian and other ethnic groups.
