Odisha heat wave toll rises to 10

Bhubaneswar, May 3 (IANS) Odisha Saturday confirmed two more deaths due to sunstroke, taking the toll on account of heat wave this summer to 10.

The two deaths occurred in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts, a senior official of the state revenue department told IANS.

While Sanjurani Senapati, 45, died in Balasore district April 24, Subal Chandra Das, 55, expired in Mayurbhanj district April 16.

The local administrations confirmed their deaths were due to sunstroke only Saturday, he added.

Odisha has been reeling under a severe heat wave with several places witnessing temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius for the past several days.

Bhabanipatna town, about 430 km from here, recorded a maximum temperature of 42.8 degrees Celsius Saturday, the state's highest of the day.

Titilagarh in Bolangir district was the second hottest place, recording a maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius followed by the industrial town of Talcher where the mercury was at 42 degrees Celsius.

With the temperature soaring, people stayed indoors, shops were closed and roads wore a deserted look in many places across the state.
