Chennai, April 23 (IANS) Over 55 million voters will Thursday decide the fate of 845 candidates in Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha constituencies that will go to the polls in a single phase, officials said Wednesday.

"A total of 9,226 polling stations have been identified as sensitive. Over one lakh security personnel have been deployed to see that voting is held in a peaceful manner," chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar told IANS here.

There are 60,817 polling stations for the general election and also the Alandar assembly constituency by-election.

A total of 17,684 polling stations will be covered via web-streaming. Live streaming of polling will be made available for public viewing.

The Election Commission has created a website - www.public.gelsws.in - where people can view the video streaming of polling across all the 39 constituencies.

The main battle is between traditional rivals AIADMK led by general secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and the DMK led by its president M. Karunanidhi and his son M.K. Stalin.

BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's two-day campaign in the state spiced up the poll scene, when he took on both the Dravidian parties saying they have been taking the people for granted.

The BJP leader also made fun of the power shortage in Tamil Nadu, saying a 12-year-old boy from Gujarat would not understand why there is a power cut when he comes to Tamil Nadu.

State BJP leaders also said Jayalalithaa cannot be Modi when it comes to governance and the state's development.

Jayalalithaa, who did not attack the BJP for a large part of her campaign, said the human development index in Tamil Nadu was better than that in Gujarat ruled by Modi.

The DMK leaders were not left behind.

Addressing a rally Tuesday, Stalin said the growth achieved by Tamil Nadu was due to his "daddy" (party chief and former chief minister) M. Karunanidhi and not because of a "lady", referring to Jayalalithaa.
