New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) The NHRC Tuesday sought a report from Uttar Pradesh Police following a media report that officials refused to file a complaint in a gang rape case.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the media report, according to which a woman was gang-raped in Haidergarh area of Barabanki district April 13, the National Human Rights Commission asked the senior superintendent of police to file a report within four weeks.

"The commission has observed that the contents of the (media) report, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of the victim," the NHRC said in a statement.

According to the rights panel, the woman's husband had raped a teenaged girl in the village and was serving time in jail.

However, the family of the girl was not satisfied with the sentence and, therefore, some relatives, including the girl's father, gang raped the convict's wife.
