Delhi,Crime/Disaster/Accident,Immigration/Law/Rights, Mon, 21 Apr 2014 IANS

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) The NHRC has asked Madhya Pradesh to compensate the kin of a man allegedly tortured to death by police and also demanded action against the guilty.

According to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Netram Khangar was found hanging from a tree in Palothar village in Datia district March 30. His family alleged that he was killed in police custody.

"We have issued notice to the government through its chief secretary to show cause within eight weeks why a sum of Rs.5 lakh not be granted as interim relief to the next of kin of Netram," the commission said in a statement Monday.

NHRC member D. Murugesan observed that after torturing him to death, police hung the deceased from a tree to make it look like a suicide while doctors who did the autopsy failed to identify the injuries and submitted a wrong report.

"We have asked the government to conduct an independent inquiry to find the guilty police officers and also initiate departmental proceedings against the three doctors who did not disclose the injuries on the victim's body in the post mortem examination," the NHRC said.

Netram, along with his two brothers, was arrested on the night of March 19 on suspicion of being involved in a case of abduction.
