Ukraine urges ICC to probe deaths of protesters

Ukraine,Politics,Defence/Security, Fri, 18 Apr 2014 IANS

Kiev, April 18 (IANS) Ukraine has asked the Intentional Criminal Court(ICC) to investigate the civilian deaths during the protests that led to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych, local media reported Friday.

In a declaration addressed to the court, Kiev said it had accepted the jurisdiction of the ICC with respect to alleged crimes committed in its territory from Nov 21, 2013 to Feb 22, 2014, Xinhua reported.

The acceptance of the ICC's jurisdiction, however, does not automatically trigger an investigation, according to the court's statute.

The ICC's prosecutors may decide whether to open investigation based on the current information.

Kiev said that in late February Ukrainian law enforcement agencies under Yanukovych used "physical pressure, special warfare and weapons" against peaceful demonstrators during the anti-government rallies, causing the death of more than 100 people.

Ukrainian authorities have put 50 people, including former senior officials, in the list of suspects who may be involved in the "massacre of demonstrators" during the protests, which began last November and turned violent Feb 18.
