Poll panel seeks details of Azam Khan's speech

Delhi,Elections 2014,Politics, Wed, 09 Apr 2014 IANS

New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) The Election Commission Wednesday sought details of Uttar Pradesh Minister Mohd Azam Khan's speech, while the BJP said his comment that only Muslim soldiers are to be credited for Kargil victory is an "insult to the Indian Army".

The minister Tuesday allegedly said the Kargil peaks were not conquered by Hindu soldiers, but by Muslim soldiers. He was addressing an election rally in Ghaziabad where he was campaigning for Samajwadi Party candidate Nahid Hasan.

"This is an insult to the Indian Army and the sacrifice made by our soldiers," BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said Wednesday.

"Such a statement during election shows the extreme of vote bank politics by the so-called secular parties. It is a dangerous example of playing communal politics over national security," he said.

The BJP has fielded former army chief Gen. (retd) V.K. Singh from the Ghaziabad constituency for the Lok Sabha election.

The Election Commission has sought details about the comments from the Samajwadi Party leader.
