Congress moves EC against Vasundhara, seeks her arrest

Delhi,Elections 2014,Politics, Sun, 06 Apr 2014 IANS

New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) The Congress Sunday moved the Election Commission seeking arrest of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje over her "open threat" at an election rally in the state.

In his letter to the election commission, K.C. Mittal, secretary of Congress' legal department drew attention of the panel to Raje's remarks at a rally at Karoli on April 5, where she allegedly said "let the elections be over, we will see who is cut into pieces".

The remarks were in reference to the comments of Saharanpur Congress candidate Imran Masood's reported hate speech against Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

"Her statement is an open threat, deliberately and intentionally made, which is a criminal offence," Mittal said, adding Raje referred to Masood's remarks but both the cases were not comparable.

Mittal said Masood had reportedly made the remarks before he had joined the Congress and was facing a case.

"There was no provocation or logic for her to retaliate in such a manner, nor can she justify her threat statement under any law, which doesn't follow the theory of retribution. This was a calculated statement premeditated to muster electoral support with impunity," he said.

Mittal urged the commission to look into the matter and "order registration of FIR and arrest, in addition to action for violation of model code of conduct".
