Jayalalithaa told to appear in court in tax case

Chennai, April 3 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was Thursday ordered by a court here to appear in person before it April 10 in a case related to non-filing of income-tax returns.

The court said no more petitions from Jayalalithaa would be entertained.

She had filed a petition for exemption from personal appearance in the case filed by the income-tax department.

The case is related to non-filing of tax returns by the AIADMK leader and her companion Sasikala for the years 1991-92 and 1992-93.

In January, the Supreme Court had dismissed an appeal by Jayalalithaa for her discharge from the case and ordered the trial court to complete the proceedings within four months.

The Chennai court had ordered Jayalalithaa and Sasikala to personally appear before it April 3.

Similarly, a special court in Bangalore trying her in a disproportionate assets case ordered her to be present in person Saturday.
