Arrested IM terrorist were planning a major terror strike: Delhi Police

New Delhi, Mar.23 (ANI): The Delhi Police on Sunday said that the four arrested Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist were planning a major terror strike in the country.

"To stop the terror activities in the country the Delhi Police Special had taken an important step. We were successful in that. We have arrested Zia-ur-Rahman alias Waqas, a Pakistani national, yesterday morning. He, along with his accomplices, was planning a major attack in the country," said S.N. Srivastava Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

Waqas is one of the most wanted people in the serial blast case in Mumbai, in which 27 people were killed 130 people were injured.

"When we interrogated him we got to know that his accomplices are in Jodhpur and Jaipur. Mohd. Maharoof and Mohd. Waqar Azhar was arrested from Jaipur while Saqib Ansari alias Khalid was arrested from Jodhpur. We had searched their homes and recovered huge amount of explosive material, detonators, electronic circuits, timer etc," he added.

The police have filed a complaint under appropriate sections in Jodhpur and the accused are being transferred to Delhi.

He also said that a major terrorist attack has been averted on India.

"We acted on the clue which we got from the interrogation of Yasin Bhatkal, Asadullah Haddi and other IM terrorists. We also received help from some sister agencies. We had deployed our teams in Karnataka, Odisha, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and other states," Srivastava added.

On March 21, the police received specific information that on March 22, Waqas would be reaching Ajmer. When he was getting out of the Ajmer station, the police identified him and nabbed him.

The accused has been presented in a court in Jodhpur and the police have been given their remand for 10 days.

The police also said that his (Waqas) motive was to meet his accomplices in Ajmer and to plan a major terror strike. (ANI)
