President of India, Pranab Mukherjee left for Bangladesh for a three-day official visit on the morning of Sunday.

This is Mukherjee's first trip abroad after ascending to the office of the President. He is accompanied by Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and four MPs. His wife Suvra Mukherjee is also accompanying him.

President visit comes at the wee hour when Bangladesh is witnessing massive clashes and revolts after Jamaat-e-Islami chief Delwar Hossain Sayeedi (Islamist opposition leader) was sentenced to death for his role in rape and killings during the 1971 Freedom War. 60 people have died since Thursday.

President will also convey India's commitment to sort out unresolved issues with its eastern neighbour,

President Mukherjee will have talks with his Bangladesh counterpart Md Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia among others during his visit.

Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai had earlier said Indian government is committed to take bilateral relations to a higher level and sort out unresolved issues with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh government will honour President Mukherjee with Liberation War Honour Award as a 1971 foreign friend of the country during this visit. He returns Tuesday night.
