Prachanda narrowly elected to Nepal Constituent Assembly (Update/Nepal Polls)

Kathmandu, Nov.23 (ANI): Maoist leader Pushpa Kumar Dahal, who is popularly known as Prachanda was elected to Nepal's Constituent Assembly on Saturday after winning one of two seats he had contested.

Prachanda won by a narrow margin.

However, three of his relatives were defeated in the polls. They included his daughter Renu Dahal, cousin Narayan Dahal and daughter-in-law Bina Magar.

Prachanda, who heads the Unified CPN-Maoist, was elected from a seat in Siraha in southern Nepal by a margin of just 900 votes.

He secured 15,244 votes to defeat his nearest rival Lila Shrestha of CPN-UML.

The Maoists are heading for a rout in the polls for the 601-member Constituent Assembly.

The UCPN-Maoist party is running a distant third behind the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, according to official results.

The Nepali Congress is leading in 97 of the 223 seats for which electoral results have been declared so far for the 601-member Constituent Assembly.

The CPN-UML is in second lead position with 86 seats.

The UCPN (Maoist) is leading in 24 seats, while the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic ) is leading in four.

The Terai Madhesi Loktanrik Party (TMLP) and others are leading in four seats each.

The Rashtriya Prajantra Party is leading in three seats, while the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum - Nepal is in the lead in two seats.

There are 240 direct seats and 335 proportionate seats. Counting for the latter is also on.

In all, 120 political parties have fielded over 10,000 candidates for the 335 proportionate seats.

Polling for the second Constituent Assembly was held on November 19, and results for 240 direct seats are yet to come in.

Nepal went to polls on Tuesday to chose a new Constituent Assembly that will have 240 members elected under a direct voting system. (ANI)
