New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) A National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team will visit Varanasi next week for an open hearing of 123 cases of alleged atrocities faced by the Scheduled Castes in and around the city, a commission official said Thursday.
"The team headed by NHRC chairperson Justice K.G. Balakrishnan will listen to an open hearing on Nov 26-27 that will comprise atrocities on the Scheduled Castes, bonded labour, atrocities by the police on the Scheduled Castes, and alleged inaction by central and state government officials," the NHRC official here said.
The visit of the members of India's apex human rights panel follows complaints lodged by human rights groups in Varanasi about negligence by public servant in preventing atrocities on the people belonging to the Scheduled Castes residing in the Varanasi division comprising Chandauli, Ghazipur, Jaunpur and Varanasi districts.
"On Nov 27, the commission will have a meeting with the local NGOs followed by a wrapup meeting with the local administration", said the commission official.
