Ex-team manager says Sri Lanka Cricket elections 'politically manipulated'

Colombo, Wed, 30 Oct 2013 ANI

Colombo, Oct 30 (ANI): The former team manager of the Sri Lankan cricket team Charith Senanayake has reportedly alleged that this year's Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) elections have been 'politically influenced and manipulated'.

At the SLC elections in April 2013, both the president's seat and the secretary's post were filled uncontested by MP Jayantha Dharmadasa and former cricketer Nishantha Ranatunga respectively, with candidates withdrawing at the last minute.

According to www.islandcricke.lk, Senanayake alleged that the elections were politically influenced and manipulated and were not free and fair as should be, adding that the democratic procedure has been greatly violated.

Stating that most of the elected officials are just there in SLC to fill a post, the former Test player further said that the government must assist in bringing in a truly democratic process for elections, as well as a professional corporate governance structure without undue influence from outside entities.

The report mentioned that Senanayake was removed as team manager in February after the board held him responsible for forwarding a letter written by the then captain Mahela Jayawardene to the media, in which Jayawardene claimed he had 'lost all confidence in SLC' due to a confidential document being leaked by the board to a local newspaper.
