Imphal , Wed, 23 Oct 2013 ANI

Imphal, Oct.22 (ANI): Villagers of Laikhong trashed two militants, and handed them over to the police on charges of extortion and misbehaviour.

The two MoU Signatory cadres, identified as Hijam Dinesh of Kangleipak Communist Party (Lallumba) and Gambhir of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (MDF), were beaten up by angry villagers for misbehaving with a girl.

Members of various insurgent outfits harass civilians through extortion, attacks and other means.

The victim said that the local villagers trashed the accused when he pointed a gun at her.

"I was going with my sister-in-law and father to have tea at the shop. My father was coming behind us. That guy came in front of me and held my hand. I asked him what was he doing. Then, my father also came and asked him not to misbehave with me. Then, the guy got angry and took out his pistol. Later, the villagers came and thrashed him," the victim said.

The police had seized a 9mm pistol and three live rounds from their possession.

The cadres also revealed that they had been extorting money and seizing mobile phones from several people.

They had also placed a monetary demand of Rs 5 lakhs on one driver.

Both outfits are signatories of the Memorandum of Understanding with the state and central governments. The people of the village want an end to such activities.

Secretary, Laikhong Village Development Authority K H Sanatomba Singh expressed concern over the this issue.

"As residents of the village, we do not want such things to happen in our place, as we are living in peace. And, they have already signed MoU, so, it is not right to do such things and trouble the villagers. As a party, they have signed the MoU and they should not create problems for us," he said. (ANI)
