World's first 3D scan of female foot shows perils of 'killer heels'

London, August 20 (ANI): The world's first 3D scan of a female foot has showed the shocking effect that the so-called 'killer heels' can have on a woman's health.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Andy Goldberg said that wearing 'killer heels' forces body weight on to the front of the foot, which may result in arthritis, clawed toes and painful bunions.

The 200,000-pound-Ped-CAT machine at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London, is capable of taking a complete 360-degree scan of a patient's foot in 60 seconds.

Goldberg, a foot and ankle specialist, said that the scanner has shown that the deformity caused by wearing high heels is much more complicated than was earlier believed.

He said that with high heels, the toes get squashed inside the shoe and the more stiletto-shaped they are, the worse they can become, the Daily Express reported.

Goldberg asserted that the toes not only get squashed, but they become clawed too.

He said that there is nothing wrong with wearing heels for an hour or two at an evening party, but if it's worn for eight hours a day for years on end, a woman is bound to have problems.

A survey of patients at the hospital's foot and ankle clinic found that 57 percent women had experienced severe pain as a result of wearing uncomfortable footwears like high heels. (ANI)
