New Delhi, Aug. 20 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday alleged that the Congress is the most communal party in the country.
It also stated that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's statements emphasizing on the need to unite against divisive forces trying to spread communalism, reflected the split within the ruling party at the Centre which is now wide open.
BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said the Prime Minister's statement is a paradoxical one because the most communal party in whose regime most riots in this country have happened happens to be the Congress Party.
"And he happens to be not only the Prime Minister of this country, but heading a government which is run by the Congress Party. And the history of India must remember and must be repeated that the most riots in the entire country have happened during the Congress regime," said Lekhi.
"So, I can only say that may be the split within the Congress is wide open and he is making a statement against the Congress Party itself," she added.
The Prime Minister earlier this evening called on the political parties to unite against divisive forces which try to spread communalism.
Dr. Singh, who was addressing a gathering on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna award ceremony here, said there is a need to ensure that communal forces do not create a divide in the society.
Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna Award for 2012 by the Prime Minister on the occasion.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was honoured on the occasion for his immense contribution in promoting communal harmony, peace and goodwill.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi and senior Congress leader Dr. Karan Singh were also present on the occasion. (ANI)
