Karzai joins 'Open Jirga' on TV to answer citizens' queries on anything and everything

Washington, Mon, 29 Jul 2013 ANI

Washington, July 29 (ANI): A debate programme named 'Open Jirga' on Afghan TV has given an opportunity to the citizens for the first time to directly question the politicians on security fears and rampant corruption in Afghanistan.

A co-production of the BBC and state-run Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), the programme has given Afghans an unaccustomed taste of political accountability on a national stage, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

According to the report, nine episodes of the programme have been aired since December in Dari and Pashto, two primary languages of Afghanistan.

The theme is based on the BBC show Question Time, which has been popular in the UK since the mid-1990s.

Several officials, ranging from President Hamid Karzai and his ministers to the army chief, have appeared on the programme to answer the queries of the citizens. (ANI)
