Experts from water research institute to visit Uttarakhand

New Delhi,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Sat, 13 Jul 2013 IANS

New Delhi, July 13 (IANS) A team of experts from the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, will visit Uttarakhand next week to review the flood control measures being undertaken in the state.

The experts along with the state irrigation department engineers will go to those affected areas where the Ganga river is cutting its banks, an official release said Saturday.

After assessing the flow and water discharge of the Ganga at Haridwar, the CWPRS team would evolve a simulation model that would serve as the guideline for putting in place flood control measures and allowing construction in the riverside areas.

It will also suggest immediately applicable measures for controlling flood and checking soil erosion along the river banks.

CWPRS has already developed a simulation model for flood control and bridge construction over the Yamuna in the national capital as well as to assess the effect of construction activities along the river.

It has also given useful and adequate tips for flood control in Bihar and West Bengal.

The incessant and intense rains that hit Uttarakhand over three days starting June 14 triggered flash floods and landslides, leading to hundreds of deaths.
